Rainy weekend in Sydney

storm 23 °C

This Friday's beer o'clock started at 5pm in a meeting room. The theme was a beach party, ironic really as this was the first wet weekend since I'd arrived in Sydney. So with a back drop of thunder and lightning we listened to the Beach Boys and drank punch and a few people wore their board shorts. About 8 of us went on to a bar and carried on with the drinking and dancing.

Saturday night I went to look at a room to rent in Surry Hills with Sarah from my hostel. Oh my god, what a dive! I'm fast losing motivation with the room hunting and resigned myself to staying at the hostel for now. Have spoken to Sarah about getting a room share with her or a flat of our own - accommodation seems to work out cheaper if you can pair up with someone. On the way back we stopped at a bar for dinner. It turned out to be full of locals which was a refreshing change from backpackers. It was a really good atmosphere and the live jazz band weren't bad either.

Went out Saturday night to the Gaff again. Encountered my first huntsman spider on the wall in the club...have also come across a wolf spider too and thought that was more scary.

The weather on Sunday was brighter so I went for a walk to the Domain, an area I haven't yet explored. It took me passed the Sydney Grammer School, Museum of Australia and the Sydney Cathedral which had some kind of music concert in progress - so I perched myself at the back for a bit. For someone who's not really into classical/spiritual music I quite enjoyed it.

A few minutes from there I stumbled on 'speakers corner'. It was great for entertainment value. Once again, the Aussie's were so politically incorrect...I love it! Lots of derogatory rubbish being spouted about women, religion, capitalism and a few hecklers thrown in for good measure. Some of it was so off the wall, I'm not sure if it was staged. I stood near to an English couple who were just in stitches with what they were hearing. I Decided to head off and one of the hecklers followed me and started this ridiculous conversation about the world. I got half way home and he was still tagging along. So I gave him my opinion, don't think he liked it much from the way he told me to get over myself and walked back the way we'd come...made me smile though.

Got back to the hostel just in time to eat and say goodbye to Roweena and Sophie (moving Eastwards).
